I\u2019m a proud Alanis Morissette fan. Jagged Little Pill came out during a particularly formative time in my life about 20 years ago, and some of her songs have really stayed with me through interesting times. Many of her albums resonate.<\/p>\n

21 Things I Want In A Lover is a song on rotation in my running playlist. It\u2019s got just the right tempo and is actually quite a profound list of traits we should look for in lovers and friends. And when I run, I subscribe to freeform mind flow- that is, I let my mind work out issues and gorge on the highs of whatever\u2019s most demanding of my psyche. Lately it\u2019s been work and leadership. So, in homage to Alanis, here is \u201c21 Things\u201d with only slight modifications to quiet my mind when I\u2019m running and pensive about management issues. (Please sing along with me.)<\/p>\n

Do you derive joy when someone else succeeds<\/span> your people succeed?<\/p>\n

Do you not play dirty when engaged in competition?<\/p>\n

Do you have a big intellectual capacity<\/p>\n

But know that it alone does not equate wisdom?<\/p>\n

Do you see everything as an illusion<\/p>\n

But enjoy it even though you are not of it?<\/p>\n

Are you<\/span> Do you support both masculine and feminine,<\/p>\n

Politically aware, and don’t believe in capital<\/span> punishment in public?<\/p>\n

These are 21 things that I want in a lover<\/span> leader-<\/p>\n

Not necessarily needs but qualities that I prefer.<\/p>\n

Do you derive joy from diving in and seeing that<\/p>\n

Loving<\/span> Leading someone can actually feel like freedom?<\/p>\n

Are you funny, \u00e1 la self-deprecating,<\/p>\n

Like adventure and have many formed opinions?<\/p>\n

Not necessarily needs but qualities that I prefer.<\/p>\n

I figure I can describe it since I have a choice in the matter<\/span> my endeavors.<\/p>\n

I’m in no hurry, I could wait forever.<\/p>\n

I’m in no rush ’cause I like being<\/span> working solo.<\/p>\n

No worries and certainly no pressure- in the meantime<\/p>\n

I’ll live<\/span> work like there’s no tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Are you uninhibited in bed<\/span> on boards more than three times a week?<\/p>\n

Up for being experimental?<\/p>\n

Are you athletic? Are you thriving in a job that helps your brother?<\/p>\n
